The Finite God

I believe the next most important question we can ask is about the nature of God. Specifically the question: Is God infinite?

My answer is no. I do not believe that God is infinite. I know that makes me a heretic in many circles, but I've never been one to aspire to victory in popularity contests. Let me explain my rational for why God is finite and then I invite one and all to pick apart my arguments.

I believe that God is bound by natural laws, consequences and restraints as are we all. To most religions God is infinite: without borders of boundaries, without substance or form, so large he covers the earth, so small he fits inside your heart, all-knowing, all-powerful, all-everything. Thats not a God that I find morally, spiritually, rationally or philosophically sound.

To illustrate this point I most often use the example of morality. It starts with a question which I proffer you:

Is God, God because he is good or is good, good because God says so?

The two options being that either God is finite or he is infinite. Either God is God because he is perfect; always following the correct processes and laws of nature, or he is infinite and there is no such thing as good and evil, only as defined by God. As I have said, organized religions certainly tend to favor the latter. I do not. Heres part of the reason why:

The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once offered the thought experiment called God is dead. In it he offers the following thought: imagine that one day you walk out of your house and the sky opens up and God almighty falls to earth and dies at your doorstep. You have irrefutable proof that God is dead. You alone have this knowledge. How does it change you? Does it change the way you behave? Does it alter your morality? Would you still follow the law? Would you still be considerate to others? Or would you become an outlaw, a renegade and a heathen?

For me, finding that God is dead would change nothing. I would still behave as I do today. I know that's not true of everyone as some people have a low sense of morality, but for me, I would hold the same moral standards with or without God. This leads me to conclude that morality exists outside of deistic entities. So, if good is good because God says so why would I still have a perception of good and evil, right and wrong without God? Instead I believe that God is God because he is good. He exists not outside of the boundaries of laws, but as a master of laws. A true perfectionist. There are other examples I would offer to this end.

For those of you who believe in the story of Noah and believe that rainbows are a sign from God, let me offer you this. An infinite God could make that sign in the sky from anything. It could simply appear as a token of good will, devoid of all substance and materialism. But it doesn't work that way does it? Rainbows are instead made by the curvature of the earth and reflected through water droplets in the sky. The knowledge of this natural process makes rainbows no less beautiful, it makes the promise and the story no less powerful, but it's a finite process. It follows the natural order of things: moving perfectly in the cycle of natural laws.

To believe in an infinite God defies any kind of solid morality. It means that God is ever-changing. Today it could be moral to kill women and children and tomorrow it may be a sin. The only difference is the subjective standards of the almighty. I don't believe that God works in such ways. The infinite God also runs into the historical paradoxes: Can God make a rock so large he cannot lift it? Can he make a law that he cannot break? Can he create something stronger than himself? Can he defeat himself? The more interesting questions are: if God is infinite, he must also be all-evil, all-angry, all-jealous and must possess as many dark and wicked qualities as good ones. If not so, he should cease to be infinite. Do you believe in an all-evil God? I do not.

I instead subscribe to the God who works through natural means: the big bang, evolution, solar reflections in the sky to paint a portrait, nuclear physics to give life giving light, etc. I find beauty in an entity that abides within the laws of nature. A perfectionist who so thoroughly understands and masters consequences that all things are possible. The universes great biologist, chemist and physicist. A God that is God because he is good. Thats the kind of being that we can and ought to strive to be. Its the kind of being I find peace in worshiping and for me it sets out a universe of perfect balance and harmony.

But I know my views stand in opposition to scores of religions with their centuries of scriptures, teachings, theology and thoughts on the subject. I readily concede my intelligence to be rather dull and would certainly love to change my mind with a good compelling argument. So, heres your chance to convince me of the infinite God.

Cheers everyone! I personally texted a buddy we would certainly list their amazing dental clinic in Oakvilles, https://parkyoursmile.com through an important article. If ever you are shopping to get a dental clinic here in the outlying Ontario region, these individuals would be really good.
